Ninjas in Pyjamas vs Team oNe Preview: NiP need win to keep Jönköping and SI 2023 hopes alive

It’s time for the BR6 to end for 2022.

After the initial three weekends of competition, the BR6 League super-weekend is here, with every team set to play three games between Friday and Sunday.

At the end of the weekend, the top four sides in the standings will qualify for the Copa Elite Six, where they will fight against two Mexican and two South American sides for the four LATAM tickets to the Jönköping Major.

Friday:

  • FURIA Esports vs Black Dragons
  • Team Liquid vs MIBR
  • FaZe Clan vs TropiCaos
  • w7m esports vs 00 Nation
  • Team oNe vs Ninjas in Pyjamas

The first game of the week will see the clash of the Ferreira brothers, as Black Dragons take on FURIA Esports. Both seem to have Siege in their blood as BD’s Felipe “nade” Ferreira and FURIA’s Thiago “handy” Ferreira are ranked fifth and eighth by SiegeGG Rating so far.

Team Liquid will try to keep their lead in the standings against MIBR, who come off an unexpected 5-7 loss against TropiCaos. Meanwhile, TropiCaos will face FaZe Clan, as the Sweden Major champions will be eager to go back to the country that saw them lift their first and so far only international trophy in Siege.

The overall BR6 2022 standings leaders w7m esports will face 00 Nation in a match that will be vital for w7m’s hopes of staying in the top four.

Finally, Ninjas in Pyjamas and Team oNe will face off in the most important game of the day.

Head-to-head

Team oNe and Ninjas in Pyjamas’ first duel dates back to Jun. 2018, but things have changed significantly for both organization’s rosters.

Team oNe looks significantly different from then, after 00 Nation picked up five of the seven members in the squad, so it’s only fair to review the mere two duels between both sides since:

  • BR6 2022 Stage 1: 7-2 to Team oNe on Skyscraper
  • BR6 2022 Stage 2: 7-5 to Ninjas in Pyjamas on Chalet

Friday’s match will serve as an effective tiebreaker. It’s worth noting that the last clash between both sides that went to overtime dates back to Oct. 2020, when Team oNe defeated NiP on Consulate 8-6.

Ninjas in Pyjamas cannot afford a loss

Ninjas in Pyjamas can’t afford a loss and nothing but a regulation victory will work for the former world champions.

They head into the final weekend of the stage in ninth place with six points, with just nine points to play for. They are currently five points behind the fourth placed team in the standings, so a loss would be catastrophic for the ninjas – it is almost guaranteed that they will miss out on the Jönköping Major, depending on other results, but would also no longer be contenders to finish in the SI Points Top 16.

Although the situation isn’t as critical for Team oNe, they face the same problem: with nine points and in seventh place, a loss would put them between a rock and a hard place.

On top of that, Team oNe are also playing for a spot to compete at the Brasileirao Finals. The top four sides in the combined season-long standings will advance to the league’s final four, Team oNe currently sit in fifth with 38 points – just behind Black Dragons and FaZe Clan, who are both tied up in fourth and third with 39 points.

Wizard’s back at the wizards’ home

Ninjas in Pyjamas’ most recent pick up, Gustavo “Wizard” Gomes, spent a whole year in Team oNe as a player of the organization’s academy roster, Golden Kids. Although his professional debut didn’t come under the wizards’ brand, he will now take them on again as part of the ninjas’ squad.

Wizard was crucial in Ninjas in Pyjamas’ victory against Team oNe in Stage 2, as the 18-year-old clutched a 1v2 situation in round six of the match. The ninjas went on to win 7-5, a win that would kick off the team’s comeback to fourth place, the Copa Elite Six, and the Berlin Major – meanwhile, oNe fell down to fifth, just one point behind the ninjas.
