Following a final play day victory over Heroic, coupled with BDS's failure to beat Team Secret 7-0, G2 Esports have qualified for their second Six Major in a row with their new lineup.
After a number of disappointing results, including a failure to qualify for the 2022 Six Invitational, G2 Esports opted to change three members of their roster to form their newest “super-team” in March.
Stage 1 saw the team finish fourth in the European League and exit the Charlotte Major in the quarter-finals after a 0-2 loss to Team Liquid. Now, the team will hope to beat this result when they return to the global stage later this month.
After the first five play days, G2 were down in eighth place with a 1-0-0-4 record. The seventh-placed team had more than twice their points, while Wolves in first had five times their total. This led many to count G2 out of the Berlin race at the league’s mid-point.
Since then, though, G2 won four games in a row against PWNZ, Outsiders, Secret, and Heroic to gain the full 12 points on offer. This left them with 15 points total, which was just enough to take fourth place away from Heroic and qualify for the Major.
Their final game tonight was particularly nail-biting, as the team needed all three points against Heroic in what was effectively a head-to-head matchup for the final spot. G2, however, managed to continue their record against Heroic by taking them down after Heroic were the only team G2 managed to beat at the Charlotte Major three months ago.
Now, G2 will travel to their home event, where they will attempt to get another playoff finish and win their first global match-up with this new roster.
The Berlin Major venue is within the eye-line of the G2 head offices, Kevin "Prano" Pranowitz will be one of just two German players at the event, and G2 are the reigning 2021 GSA League champions, making this as close to a home-turf event as possible for G2.
Furthermore, this event will also be Thomas "Shas" Lee’s final tournament on G2, as he will be leaving the organization following over five years on various permutations of the team. With it being over three years since his last global title, he will likely be eager to bookend his time on the team with another one.
G2 will be joined from Aug. 15 to 21 by Wolves Esports, Rogue, and MNM Gaming.
